This will equip you with the stamina and experience to go straight into professional productions. Throughout this year your work and profile will be actively promoted by the school. Your grand finale is a West End showcase for an invited audience of industry figures including casting directors, agents, producers, directors and choreographers.

Curriculum in Detail:

Years One and Two:  Dance:
Dance is an integral part of musical theatre. You will develop your competence and confidence in jazz, ballet, tap, contemporary and pas de deux. You will also develop your understanding of the human body so you can express yourself freely and creatively.

Singing:
An important feature of the Musical Theatre programme is the provision of bespoke one-to-one singing and repertoire tuition. Weekly singing lessons ensure that you can produce a well-placed, consistent sound throughout the vocal range without a noticeable break between registers. Repertoire lessons provide a varied collection of songs from musical theatre and contemporary repertoires.

Acting:
Acting classes enable you to develop your skills to their full potential. You will learn to perform in a convincing way by developing your imagination, concentration and observation skills. Acting technique will teach you how to create and portray characters, control movement, speech and voice in performance and how to work effectively in a disciplined way as a member of a team. You will develop confidence in using a range of acting styles and increase your understanding of theatrical texts.
Contextual Studies
This course element provides the essential musical theatre background to enable you to become an informed and knowledgeable performer. Modules will introduce you to the work of major composers, librettists, dramatists, choreographers and directors working in the field.

Performance:
As a preparation for their final year, first and second year students work on a series of projects, which are presented before an audience of Course Tutors and students, at the end of each term. This is an opportunity to put into practice all techniques learned and to develop your ability to combine singing, dance and acting.
Professional Practice
In your second and third year you will participate in a series of career workshops, designed to provide you with everything you need to know as a performer. These sessions will feature performers, agents, casting directors, tax specialists and Equity and Spotlight representatives. Audition classes with guest directors and choreographers will help prepare you for the realities of the audition process. You will also be advised on how to prepare your CV and what makes a successful headshot.

Year Three

Professional Performance
The third year of your course is a production year in which you will consolidate your skills and gain extensive experience in public performance. As well as your regular classes, you will participate in three staged musicals before a paying audience with full sets, costumes, lighting, sound and musical accompaniment. You will work in our two professionally staffed theatres, and our newly built studios, with directors, choreographers, designers and musicians from the industry as well as professional stage managers and wardrobe staff.
In addition, you will take part in a Graduation Showcase at a West End theatre before an invited audience of agents, directors, producers and choreographers.

Assessment:
Your progress will be actively monitored throughout your training. You will receive verbal reports from each of your subject tutors in February and July. In addition, each Year Head, Heads of Department and the Course Director will comment on your progress.
Dance, Acting and Singing assessments take place at the end of the Summer Term and you will be assessed on all your productions and projects.
