Rachel- 20th November 2012

Today's lesson was a typical rehearsal lesson! We ran the piece and then worked on individual scenes. After we wrote notes on how we need to improve the piece, we focused on making/improving our set!

Here is what we need to do to improve our performance:

 - Gerda and Kai's close relationship needs to be emphasised and made clearer in the opening scene. We should put a sequence at the start of Kai and Gerda playing tag- it needs to show how much they love each other because at the moment their relationship isn't shown to be very strong, even though it is.

 - Grandma also needs to bring in a back story about how she wants Kai to live with them but it hasn't been possible yet. Last lesson, we decided to bring in a back story about Kai being an orphan and to heighten the audience's views on Kai's relationship with Gerda (and Grandma) this would be good idea.

 - We also need to ensure we don't use the words 'stab' or 'death' as this performance is going to be shown to a VERY young audience and we don't want them getting upset!

 - We also need to incorporate the 6 senses into each scene as we are not only being assessed on our acting but also in our storytelling. We need to use the 6 senses- touch, smell, hearing, taste, sight, emotion into our piece to help the audience imagine the different scenes.

 - In the flower garden scene, the witch needs to make her plans clearer. She should say what her plans are at the beginning of the scene as it isn't clear what she intends to do with Gerda.

 - We are also going to add in a part where Kai is reminded of Gerda and the Snow Queen flips! She then goes to flower garden as she hears that Gerda is there- when she's not there she goes crazy again! This will show just how much Snow Queen wants Kai for herself and will do anything to get rid of Gerda.

 - In the Palace scene, I think they could incorporate some physical theatre as not much is happening. They could come up with a movement sequence for when Gerda rips the Princess's dress and also when Gerda stitches it back up. This will add different dynamics to the scene and make it more interesting.

 - I also think that Gerda should give each person she visits a piece of advice. For example, she should tell the Flower Children to never forget about their families and the Princess that she shouldn't be forced into marrying someone she doesn't want to marry. This will be effective as it makes Gerda seem even more 'nice' and 'friendly'. This will also teach the children that they should never be made to do something they don't want to do.

 - The Snow Queen and Kai also need an acitivty to be getting on with when they're at the palace. For example, Kai could be cleaning up the palace for the Snow Queen and comes across the broken mirror. The Snow Queen sees him trying to fix the broken mirror and instantly tells him not to and offers him some 'Iced' Buns/ another treat. This will be good as it makes their relationship clearer- Kai is completely and utterly devoted to the Snow Queen.

 - We also need to think of a valid reason for the Reindeer running away from the Snow Queens Palace  because at the moment, it just seems a bit ridiculous with him going all the way to the castle just to run away because of fear. Maybe he needed to charge his antlers? Or the Snow Queen had turned him into a reindeer- he was once a man?

 - We also need to bring in  a back story for the Queen and King. At the moment, the audience wouldn't be able to tell that they are married. They should talk about how they want the best for their daughter so marrying this rich prince is the best thing for her because they love her so much! The conversation will show the audience what sort of people they are and this will be good as it will allow them to understand the characters and their motives.

 - The Finn Mann also needs a purpose. The scene works well with the gossipers but the Finn Mann doesn't give any advice to Gerda at all which makes the scene rather pointless. As a class, we need to come up with a piece of advice he gives Gerda that will help her when it comes to saving Kai.

FINAL SCENE DEVELOPMENT SUGGESTIONS:
- We need to build up the tension by prolonging the scene. Gerda needs to take longer to get to the Snow Queen's chamber. She should talk to the frozen people and feel sorry for them- this also, once again, emphasises her caring nature.
- The statues need to be more spaced out as the scene itself looks very cramped in the corner and the audience might not be able to see Kai/Snow Queen.
- We also need to use specific references to Gerda getting in the castle as this will help the audience imagine what the castle looks like and at the moment it's not specific at all.

We spent the rest of our lesson making props/set for the Snow Queen:

I was working in a group with Emily and Lizzie making the Snow Queen's sleigh. Here we are sticking cardboard together with duck tape to make the 'shell' of the sleigh:

Lindzie and polly were painting leaves they had collected with silver and glitter. This made them look shiny and icy- as if they'd come from the Snow Queen's land. Here they are painting them:

Max and Jess were making leaves and crowns for the Flower Garden/Flower Witch. They used shiny green/silver material to make the leaves and were also using this material to make a crown for the Flower Witch. Here they are:

I also helped spray paint the trees silver and white. We had to do this outside as the spray is dangerous if used inside! This was quite hard to do as it was windy but in the end we got the tree done and it looked brilliant!
